The Orphan Rescue Kit (O.R.K.) provides essential items that support a vulnerable African orphan for one year.  Rotarians and non-Rotarians can support one at risk child by donating a complete Orphan Rescue Kit (O.R.K.) at $450 per kit. Smaller donations fund nutrition support, school supplies, uniforms and fees for one child.   You can donate a complete O.R.K. or select one or more individual kit items.  All item costs are shown in US$.

Complete O.R.K. -  $450

Support one at-risk child for one year.

Or make a donation for specific O.R.K. items for one child.

Mosquito net - $4

Malaria is the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly among pregnant women and children under 5. Studies suggest that between 20 - 25% of deaths can be attributed to malaria. Millions of people are at risk every moment of the day.  Mosquito nets help keep the mosquitos away, thus greatly reducing new cases of malaria. These nets offer greater than 70% protection when compared with no net at all.

Rain Coat  -  $7

Rainfall occurs seasonally throughout most of Africa. The coast, eastern plateaus, and Lake Basin of Kenya experience two rainy seasons: the long rains extends roughly from March to June, and the short rains lasts from approximately October to December. Most of the children must walk to school and some travel miles to get there.  NO school buses here!!  So a rain coat is essential especially in the wet seasons.

Writing materials - $7

Most of the governments in the countries where we are rescuing orphans do not provide any materials for education.  They cannot afford them. So it is up the individual pupil to supply their own writing materials.

Blanket - $7

Even though we are in Africa, night time temperatures in cities like Johannesburg drop to well below freezing and a blanket is essential to keep a child warm and cozy.

Leather school shoes - $14

One of the best investments you can make to help our orphans is to provide them with shoes. Most African children have no means to get shoes and shoes form part of their mandatory uniform. Without this uniform, they are prevented from entering school.

Leather Soccer/ Netball - $16

ALL African children are sports mad. The boys love football and all dream of playing for Manchester United or Liverpool. The girls love netball and basketball. There are many girls playing football as well these days in Africa.

Sports Kit and Shoes $27

Full School Uniform - $27

NO UNIFORM NO SCHOOL.

That is the rule in most African nations today. So, without a doubt, the first item to invest in would be the uniform. There have also been a lot of problems with preferred school uniform suppliers making it even harder for orphans to get a uniform.

Back pack - $30

The essential item for a child going to school, is somewhere to put all their books and writing materials. Also the backpack provides a place to put the lunch box which is item # 12 in the O.R.K.

Annual School Fees - $68

This is probably the most important part of orphan rescue for children going beyond 6th grade. Fees vary from country to country. Most African nations provide free schooling up to grade 6. After that, it costs the parents for secondary schooling. If you are an orphan, you have NO chance to make secondary school. The orphan then must find work in countries such as Kenya where unemployment is 50% or higher

Text books - $69

We have shown typical American text books. However the same applies to Africa. Perhaps the single most expensive item for a child going to school in Africa today is text books. With the back pack item # 8 the orphan going to school has a chance of protecting their books from theft.

Exercise books @ 12 per term - $74

As with text books, the exercise books are essential for a successful stay at school. They will require 12 exercise books per term and it is an onerous obligation on behalf of an orphan to find the money to buy exercise books.

1 meal per day @ $.40/day - $100

Life is tough for an orphan in Africa. Now that you have provided one orphan with the essential tools for an education, all that remains is to give them one good meal every day. Without food in the stomach they go to school hungry and their learning skills are impaired. It may be the only meal they get every day.

One O.R.K. for one child - $450

Invest in one complete kit.  This one donation will help progress the most vulnerable children on earth to a secure future. Then, look at supporting them for a longer term.    WE THANK YOU...

Your Donation Makes a Difference

Your Donation reaches the children through local Rotarians in all phases of this program and is used to help Orphans and vulnerable children in communities where HOPE Worldwide is already at work: Nairobi, Kenya, Lagos, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Zambia and other sites in South Africa. Plans for expansion include Botswana and other countries as funds become available.

You will receive a tax/thank-you receipt letter from RFFA and quarterly articles and pictures about assisted children and their communities on the RFFA.org site. To avoid discrimination from other children who may not at that time yet be receiving assistance, and to keep overheads at the very lowest point, Orphan Rescue does not identify individual children to individual donors.
